Nelson Academy Prospectus

15 Art At Nelson Academy we have lots of opportunities to develop skills and enjoy learning in all areas of the arts. We are very lucky to work with artists and craftspeople from local and international backgrounds, giving pupils wide ranging experiences in both visual and performance arts. Pupils regularly collaborate on producing displays for our shared areas as well as developing individual skills whilst working on their own projects. We are currently in the application process for Artsmark – an award celebrating academies/schools that champion the arts and strive for excellence in their provision. As well as recognising academies/schools that make the arts come alive, the Artsmark award is a useful, practical and valuable tool for enriching arts provision. It ensures the benefits brought by the arts are infused across the curriculum and the academy community. It provides access to high quality practical resources and enviable networks that will enable us to use the arts to inspire learning. Computing Computing, according to the New National Curriculum ‘has been developed to equip young people in England with the foundational skills, knowledge and understanding of computing they will need for the rest of their lives’. This involves a multi-faceted approach to logic, reasoning, interpreting, problem solving and creating, and safety. The four main areas encompassing these skills are: • Understanding technology • Digital literacy • Programming • E-safety Pupils are given opportunities to develop and apply computing capabilities in their study of New National Curriculum subjects. In order to facilitate learning, the academy has a networked multimedia machine in every classroom from Nursery to Year 6. Each classroom has an interactive whiteboard which both teachers and pupils use during the day, as well as classroom laptops. There are also pupil laptops available for a range of cross-curricular learning opportunities including internet research, programming lessons, typing practice, maths games and various English intervention strategies. Children have been invited to apply for the position of a ‘Digital Leader’ within their class. Those who are successful are responsible for assisting class teahers, supporting other children and working alongside the computing subject leader to improve computing across the academy.
